Tech Jobs in Crisis: What These Layoffs Really Mean for the Future of Work

80,000 Jobs Gone: Why 2025 Turned Into Tech’s Harshest Year Yet

The year 2025 was expected to mark the beginning of a significant AI-powered future. Instead, it has turned into a very difficult time for people working in technology. More than 80,000 tech jobs have already been lost this year, and the number is still rising.

These cuts are not limited to small firms. Some of the biggest companies have made deep cuts. Reports read that Microsoft, Intel, and Meta are among the leaders of this layoff wave. TCS is removing over 12,000 roles, calling it a case of “skill mismatches.” Meta, Google, and Amazon together cut about 20,000 to 25,000 roles.

Other companies have also been affected. Klaviyo reduced its staff by 20 percent in July and August. Red Hat laid off nearly 800 employees. Qorvo, a semiconductor firm, cut 250 positions. Salesforce, Cisco, and Oracle have also announced layoffs, though exact numbers are unclear. Startups and smaller firms have contributed another 5,000 to 8,000 job losses.

The main driver of these layoffs is the rise of artificial intelligence. While the economy and corporate restructuring play a role, experts agree that automation is at the center of the disruption. Many routine and mid-level jobs are being automated, leaving thousands of people without work.

The numbers are especially severe in the United States, where total job cuts across industries have already passed 7,40,000 this year. That is the highest level since the pandemic. Tech companies have contributed a large part of that total. India, another major hub for technology, is also feeling the impact. Mid-career professionals are facing the greatest risk.

The way these layoffs have been handled has also added to the pain. Reports suggest that more than half of employees were informed through email or phone calls, often with only a few weeks to transition.

Experts believe this shift will increase the demand for new skills. Jobs in AI engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and DevOps are expected to grow, even as traditional software roles shrink.

However, analysts warn that this is not over yet. The total number of global layoffs in 2025 may cross 100,000 before the year ends. While companies speak about efficiency and cost savings, the human cost of the AI revolution is becoming very clear.

For workers, the message is simple but harsh: reskill quickly, or risk being left behind.

The World Food Programme is now accepting applications for something called the “Resilience Innovation Programme” in Bangladesh. The deadline to apply is 29 August 2025.

Now, what exactly is this about? It is focused on building long-term systems to help vulnerable people, especially those who are poor or socially at risk, deal with climate shocks and other emergencies. They want to scale up certain tools. That includes individual insurance products, faster emergency response systems, and ways to support livelihoods that can handle unpredictable weather and changing conditions.

But it is not just about rolling out tools. The idea is to work closely with governments and private companies so that these solutions actually reach the people who need them the most. They are aiming for something that lasts. Something that does not fade once the project ends.

This effort is part of the second Country Strategic Plan, which runs from 2022 to 2026. The first plan made some progress. Now, this second one wants to go further. Not just running programs, but handing over responsibility to national and local actors like governments, communities, and private sector players. The overall aim is to build a system that helps rural economies become stronger and more secure in the face of risks.

The programme focuses on some main areas. Food security and livelihoods are two of them. That means activities like providing seeds or farm tools, offering cash assistance, assessing food needs, helping local farmers reach markets, and teaching people how to depend less on aid.

As for where this work will happen, the focus is on several parts of Bangladesh. These include Khulna, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barisal, and Chittagong. If your organization wants to apply, you need to show that you really know these places. Not just know them, but have worked there. You need to prove you have at least two years of experience in these divisions, districts, and sub-districts.

Your organization should also have deep knowledge of agriculture and livestock insurance. That includes a good understanding of local laws and regulations on insurance and micro-insurance.

Besides technical skills, they want groups that can pass on their knowledge to communities. Ideally, this will be done in partnership with local insurance brokers. You should also have experience with community outreach, financial inclusion, adapting to climate change, reducing disaster risks, and supporting people through social protection.

If your organization has conducted food or cash distribution, assisted with emergency response, built resilience-focused infrastructure, or implemented Risk Reduction Action Plans, that will enhance your application.

Finally, your proposal will be judged on several points. These include how easy it is to access and operate in the area, how clearly you describe your activities, how cost-effective the plan is, what resources you bring, whether you have worked with UN agencies before, and how strong your local presence is. They will also look at whether your team can actually manage the work well.

Max Weber Fellowship 2026–2027: What the Selection Committee Looks For

The European University Institute in Florence has started accepting applications for the Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellowship for the academic year 2026 to 2027.

This programme lasts for twelve months. It begins on the first of September 2026 and continues until the end of August 2027. It is a residential programme, which means the selected researchers need to stay in Florence for the duration. The last date for sending applications is the fifteenth of October 2025 at fourteen hours Central European Summer Time.

The fellowship is created for researchers who are at the beginning of their academic careers. It is meant for people working in subjects like social sciences and humanities. It is not just a space to sit and write research alone. The programme combines individual research time with training sessions, seminars, and guidance on academic teaching and publishing. Many previous fellows have said that it helped them to build their research profile and move towards stable academic positions later.

Researchers who are currently working at the European University Institute cannot apply unless they have worked outside the Institute in a full-time position or fellowship for at least one year.

Applicants must have strong skills in the English language equal to level C1 of the Common European Framework. Proof is not needed while applying, but will be required if selected. A thesis written in English or a published work can serve as evidence. People who are native English speakers or have completed postgraduate studies in English do not need to provide further proof.

Fellows are offered twelve months in Florence along with a monthly financial allowance. Travel support is provided. Additional allowances are available for families if applicable. The programme also includes workshops, training for academic careers, and guidance for publishing research.

The selection process is competitive. A committee of academics evaluates the applications. They consider the quality of the research, the originality of the proposal, and how well the work matches with the faculty at the Institute. Some applicants may be contacted for further information during the process.

Big Change Ahead: Why US Visa Interviews Will Be Harder for Indians from September 2

New US visa interview rules are coming into effect from September 2, 2025. If you are planning to travel to the United States after that date, the process will feel different. The U.S. Department of State is cutting back on interview waivers, which means a lot more people will have to go in person now. This applies not only to first-time applicants but also to many people who are simply renewing their visas.

It feels like they are undoing the relaxed update that came in February earlier this year. For students heading to universities, professionals on H-1B, and families planning holidays, this change is going to matter.

Know what exactly is changing? For most non-immigrant visas, an in-person interview will now be required. The B-1/B-2 tourist and business visa renewals are affected the most. The waiver window that used to be 48 months is being cut down to just 12. That means if your last visa expired more than a year ago, you will have to attend an interview. The previous age exemptions for children under 14 and seniors over 79 are mostly being removed, too. Even student visas (F and M), work visas like H-1B, and exchange visas (J) that sometimes skipped interviews will now almost always require one.

Who falls under this rule? Pretty much everyone in those categories: B-1/B-2 applicants, students, H-1B holders, J exchange visitors, children under 14, seniors over 79, and anyone who ever had a visa refused unless it was overturned later. Even people who qualified for the drop-box system earlier may no longer get it. Some official or diplomatic visa holders might still have waivers, and in very specific cases, a full-validity B-1 or B-2 renewal could qualify. But even then, the consular officer can still ask you to come in.

For Indian travellers, this has some obvious impacts. Wait times are going to stretch because so many more people will need appointments. Students who used to skip interviews under drop-box rules will now have to go in person, which could affect joining dates. H-1B professionals visiting India to renew will have to factor in interview slots, which can make returning to work in the U.S. a bit more complicated. Tourists and business travellers will lose some flexibility since the waiver is now limited to visas that expired within 12 months. Families will feel it too because kids under 14 and older parents will, in most cases, need interviews now. And of course, interviews bring more preparation: documents, biometrics, and travel to the consulate. All of it adds extra time and cost.

So what can you do now? First thing is to check your visa category carefully and find out if you still fall under any waiver at all. If you are a student or someone renewing a work visa, applying early is the safest option.

This change is going to affect a large number of Indian students, working professionals, and even families planning trips.  A bit of preparation now can save you a lot of stress later.

When you stop and really think about it, the future of India depends a lot on the young people who are stepping into the job market right now. A few years ago, in 2019, according to some estimates, India entered a special phase in its population trend. The number of working-age people became higher than the number of children and the elderly. This kind of balance gives a country a rare advantage. Experts say it will last for about thirty years. But there is one important condition. If India does not become richer during this time, it might not get another chance. It could remain stuck.

This puts a heavy burden on the current generation. But they cannot carry it unless there are good jobs available. Jobs that help people become more productive. Jobs that help families earn more. At the moment, these kinds of jobs are missing. The economy seems to be growing. But job opportunities are not growing with it. That is a problem.

It is not easy to know the real number of people without jobs in India. The data is often unclear. In a country where many people do not work in formal jobs, the numbers can give the wrong idea. Some events clearly show how bad the job situation is.

The government knows this, too. That is why a new program was approved this month. It gives companies a little support for each new person they hire. The company gets 3,000 rupees each month for each new employee, and one month of social security is also paid by the government. The plan lasts for two years. If the company is in the manufacturing sector, then it lasts for four years.

These numbers are not very large, but the hope is that this will help create more jobs. Still, it is not clear how much this will help. The plan assumes that the biggest challenge for companies is the cost of hiring. But many employers say that is not the real issue. The bigger concern is finding workers with the right skills.

That may sound strange in a country with such a large population. But what companies really mean is that they are unable to find workers who are skilled and dependable. This is especially true in manufacturing, which the government wants to support. It is not that workers cost too much. It is that there are not enough people with the right training. This is what needs attention.

One big reason is the poor quality of basic education. Many children finish school without learning simple skills. It may already be too late for the young people entering the workforce today. But schools still need to be fixed. A well-known school survey showed that only one in four students in grade three could solve a basic subtraction problem. That is something they should have learned in grade two. As they move up in school, this learning gap only gets wider. If many people cannot even do simple math, it is hard to expect them to qualify for skilled jobs.

Then there is vocational training. In theory, these programs are supposed to teach young people useful skills. But in practice, many of these schools are not working well. The training does not match what companies need. And most of these schools do not even help their students get jobs afterward. One government report said that less than one in a thousand students from Industrial Training Institutes actually got placed in a job.

Now, someone might ask why people do not learn these skills on their own. Why not find a way without waiting for the government? The reason is simple. The pay difference is very small. There is not much reward for becoming skilled. A trained worker in a car factory may earn only 20 to 25 percent more than a basic helper. That is not enough to make someone invest in training.

Another issue is job safety. Many people try very hard to get into government jobs. Even if the number of openings is small, they still prefer these jobs. Government jobs come with benefits, health care, and long-term security. Private sector jobs do not feel safe, and there is not much support if someone loses their job. So people do not want to take that risk.

The government needs to do more than just give money to companies. It must make workers feel safe enough to invest in learning. Schools must teach well. Job training must be better. And maybe online tools can be used to teach skills in a new way.

Just giving companies a little money for each new worker will not solve the bigger problem. If India wants to grow and provide real jobs to its people, it must fix the deeper issues.
