Half a Million Jobs in Italy by 2028 - And Yes, Indians Can Apply

Italy Job, Giorgia Meloni
Synopsis: Italy has approved a new migration plan to bring in 500,000 foreign workers by 2028, including Indians, to tackle its growing labour shortage. Despite its tough stance on illegal migration, the Italian government is opening legal pathways for seasonal workers, carers, and skilled professionals to support its ageing population and struggling economy.

Dreaming of living and working in Italy? Here's your chance. The Italian government just gave the green light to a major migration plan that could bring in 500,000 foreign workers by 2028. Yes, half a million. And yes, Indians are on the list.

This new plan is not just some paperwork shuffle. It is about filling real jobs. Italy’s economy, the third-largest in the eurozone, is hurting for workers. Their words? They need people for “essential labour” that just is not available inside the country.

So here's the breakdown: the plan allows for 1,64,850 new entries in 2025 alone, with the total climbing to nearly 5 lakh over the next few years. This is the second big push under PM Giorgia Meloni. She has already approved over 9,50,000 legal entries since taking office in 2022. That is a big number, especially for a leader known for being pretty strict on migration.

Meloni’s party talks tough about borders and undocumented migrants. But behind the scenes? Italy is dealing with an ageing population and a shrinking workforce. The reality is, they need people to keep the engine running.

The new jobs cover all sorts: seasonal and non-seasonal roles, home carers, and even highly-skilled professionals. So whether you're a farmer, a nurse, or a software engineer, there’s probably something for you in the mix.

Antonio Bartoli, Italy’s ambassador to India, put it like this: “We don’t want traffickers deciding who comes in. We want a fair system. One that gives migrants a chance to work, live well, and be part of the society.”

Bottom line? If you've ever thought about moving abroad for work, Italy just opened the door. Wide.
