India Moves Ahead of Japan, Now 4th Biggest Economy in the World
India has just overtaken Japan to become the fourth-largest economy in the
world. The latest numbers from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirm
this change.
India’s economy is now worth USD4.187 trillion, while Japan stands at USD4.186 trillion. The gap is small, but
it’s enough to put India ahead.
The United States remains the biggest economy,
followed by China and Germany. Just last year, India was in fifth place.
This update was shared by B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog,
after a meeting of the Governing Council.
The IMF also expects India to grow by 6.2% in 2025–26. That’s more than double
the predicted global growth of 2.5%.
During the same meeting, the Vikasit Bharat@2047 plan was also discussed.
It says India has climbed into the top five global economies over the past ten
years.
This progress follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal to make India the third-largest economy during his third
term. In the 2024 elections, he won 240
seats and came back to power.
Earlier this year, at a post-Budget event, PM
Modi said the economy was in a poor state in 2014. “We had to fix a broken
system. There were huge scams. But we brought the economy back on track,” he
said.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said in May 2024 that India is likely to become the third-largest economy by 2025. She shared this hope shortly after the new government took charge again.
